Microsoft Edge: a browser for business?
While Microsoft Edge enjoyed a period of rapid growth following its reboot in 2020, the browser still lags behind Chrome and Safari, which both have a much larger market share. the latest data (opens in a new tab) show.
Despite the steady stream of feature updates, renewed marketing efforts, and Edge’s integration with the new company Windows 11 operating system, Microsoft tried to move the needle in any meaningful way.
The software giant also fired some targets of its own that probably didn’t attract Microsoft Edge to potential new users.
For example, Microsoft has recently been forced to back out of a policy that caused unreasonable difficulties in the process of changing the default browser in Windows 11 after users revealed their dissatisfaction.
Microsoft also came under fire for trying to block links opened through its own services (e.g. Windows 11 widgets, Start menu, etc.) from launching in any browser other than Edge, another tactic that received criticism from the community .
But the upcoming update indicates a shift in approach; The company is now trying to build on the popularity of services like Outlook and other elements of the Microsoft 365 suite to encourage the move to Edge, which is a more subtle tactic that is less likely to anger the community.
Microsoft has also targeted improvements in terms of performance and security that business users in particular will appreciate. For example, in recent months, the company has strengthened its built-in password manager, implemented an integrated VPN service, and implemented new tricks to improve browsing speed.
If Microsoft Edge is to compete head-to-head with market leaders, the team will need to claim a specific niche or use case. Perhaps in the business market she found one.
