Virgin Media O2 gives children a glimpse into the future with a connected playground that uses gigabit broadband and 5G mobile network to power lights, sound and interactive equipment.
Connected Playground is a hybrid of traditional play and technology. The concept was born from research into parents’ perceptions of their children’s play habits and the role technology plays in their development.
Research has shown that almost two-thirds of British parents (64%) worry that their children are not getting enough outdoor stimulation. Seven in ten (68%) believe their children need more tech-equipped playgrounds.
A unique outdoor experience
Following the results of this research, Virgin Media O2 took over Kings Square Gardens in Islington to create outdoor play that encourages creativity, smart play and technology.
This playground equipment has been enhanced with sensors and pressure pads to make it interactive. Includes climbing frames, swings, slides and ladders.
Each interaction with the playground equipment changes the pitch and tempo of the song, which can be heard from speakers scattered throughout the playground. When children complete the course, their music track can be downloaded so they can take it home and listen to it later.
Virgin Media O2 and Dallington Primary have teamed up to give children aged six to nine the opportunity to express their creativity through a musical challenge.
Dr Sam Wass, a child psychologist and expert on the secret lives of Channel 4’s 4 and 5 year olds, highlighted the scientific evidence that outdoor play is beneficial for children’s mood and concentration. However, it can be difficult for parents to get their children to play digitally because their expectations and experiences are constantly changing. Wass stated: “New hybrid environments such as Virgin Media O2’s Connected Playground could play a key role in the future in encouraging children to embrace outdoor technology and in giving children the tools they need to think creatively and play.”
Gareth Malone (parent and star of The Choir) noticed that his children live in a world related to gadgets and gadgets. “It’s the world they grew up in.” That’s why it’s important for young people to get outside and play with an enthusiasm that matches what they like to do. “The Virgin Media O2 Connected Playground is a great example of this. It uses technology, lighting, sounds and musical elements to provide the sense of accomplishment that all children strive for when playing. I’m intrigued by what else can be done with future technologies and connectivity.”
